My band has got a gig in September and i was looking to get a recording of it from a portable recorder. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have a pretty small budget. Also, any recommended programs for transferring and editing cassettes onto PC?
    Thanks in advance.

Why not get a portable digital recorder?? Much much easier to transfer to PC than tape, IMO. Plus, they are relatively inexpensive and sound great. But, you could also just go the direct to PC route as well with the right mic preamps and recording software.

if there's a pa system at the gig just ask the pa if they got recording possibility there in the pa system it self otherwise ask if you can connect your recording material to the pa so you can have soundboard quality.

that's the way we've done it in the past.
